Finally "real Hip Hop" takes center stage in the form of Kendrick Lamar's latest CD titled DAMN. Now when I say "center stage" I'm talking about conscious lyrics over relevant beats and production-which will get the proper and popular push by the music industry's powers that be. To know that popular radio will be spinning conscious lyrics and the type of subject matter to make you think have "real Hip Hop fans" hyped right now.
Myself, I've been saying for years that Kendrick Lamar is the complete truth. His ability to reach not only "simple-minded rap fans" but to be able to transcend the boundaries of the so-called rap genre make him a super star. His lead single and video titled "Humble" is clearly the perfect way to make a comeback. The video visuals offers more than just "n#gg@'s" standing around or the stereotypical narratives that we often see in rap music videos.
Listening to the entire CD made me feel like "wow" Kendrick have been listening to the streets-
as we have been wanting some music with a message, top notch production and real lyrics. To know that Kendrick is a part of one of Hip Hop's royal blood lines, makes it even that much better and of-course obvious. If you take the time and really think about who came from (or is a product of) the house of Easy E's Ruthless Records, then you would realize the thoughts and stars would be almost limitless.
In-short, Kendrick was once said to carry the weight of Compton on his back. With all due respect, to limit him "now" to just the city of Compton will be a huge understatement. In the year 2017, Kendrick has the entire musical genre (rap) on his back. During a time where mumble rap, one dimensional concepts and production is dominating mainstream radio, I'm glad that we finally have a positive alternative. Until the next time, have some fun and get something done.
