So this past weekend one of the biggest boxing matches of the year aired for free, on national television. For those who are aware of how important this was to the sport of boxing also knows how important to Ohio this fight truly was. One of the fighters was representing Cincinnati (Adrian Broner) and the other was representing the entire northeastern Ohio and his name is Showtime Shawn Porter. For those that don't know Adrian Broner is often seen as a loud mouthed person with an even louder ego. You can catch Adrian on websites like World Star Hip Hop.com showcasing and promoting his brand. And of-course his brand is filled with everyday so-called rap stereotypes like: making it rain in the club, flaunting his wealth as well as trying to rap. If you didn't know that he was a professional boxer with exceptional skills and promise you'd would swear that he was a below average rapper.
Shawn Porter is the complete opposite when comparing him to the before mentioned Broner. Shawn is often viewed as soft spoken and a very classy individual. Also as someone that represent everything that's great about boxing and it's glorious history. Which is why I think that he is one of the biggest drawers in the game today. Every since the "boxing powers that be" signed those television contracts to help try to put boxing back in the mainstream on a more consistent basis, Shawn and a few others has been charged with the responsibility of facilitating those efforts. Having been a champion last year, Shawn's commitment and drive in his DNA. His manager, trainer and father Kenny Porter has been more than instrumental in his son's success. So when the fight was over on Saturday night it was to no surprise to Kenny that Shawn was the victor.
So I gave Kenny a call to wish them congratulations and of-course the brother had nothing but positive words to say about his son and the direction that their lives is heading. He told me that Shawn prefer to say that he represents the entire northeastern Ohio seeing that he was born in Cleveland, raised in Akron, went to school and played football in Stow and Cuyahoga Falls. Kenny also said that he wanted everyone in Akron to know that "if you don't have a passion for something-find it and push it to the limit and you to can reach your goals". Speaking of goals, Shawn won the fight against Broner. Proving that actions speaks louder than words. You can check out Shawn @shawnporterboxing.com. Until next time have some fun and get something done.
