Local Media Discuss Media and Community

Hiram Akeem (seated far left)
Recently we were invited to be on a panel discussing the local media paradigm as it relates to diversity, digital media and print media. The event was put on by a non-profit organization called Leadership Akron. Leadership Akron’s key goal is simply to connect leaders in an effort to advance the Akron community.

The panel took place on December the 4th at the Maple Valley Library located on Copley road. The people on the panel along with myself was considered a part of Akron’s local media scene. On the panel was the Devil Strip Magazine’s Editor Rosie Murphy, Mike Shear from the Akron Beacon Journal along with myself Bro. Hiram Akeem.

One of the great things about the panel discussion was the questions that were asked about (what I like to call) the great digital divide. For those that are not familiar with the term “digital divide” allow me to break it down in the simplest way possible. Once upon a time, everything we did was done offline. From buying music, shopping, watching TV or even watching a movie all was done without a computer, Now all of that and more is done on your PC, laptop or smartphone. The moment when the transition began back with Napstar (the music trading program) that’s what I call the digital divide.

As a representative of Akron's longest-running (black-owned) publication The Reporter Newspaper, I was honored to be on the same panel as The Devil Strip and The Beacon Journal. Both Rosie and Mike answered questions with professionalism and enthusiasm. For more information regarding the panel discussion check out our vibe session with Rosie Murphy from the Devil Strip Magazine in the video posted below. Until next time, have some fun and get something done.
