Chuck's Chatter by Charles Dent lll

Every week I come across countless websites during my attempt to gather in-tel for my weekly articles at The Reporter Newspaper and Ill-board.com. Many times I find the same (not so good garbage) that you hear on the radio everyday. The same can be said for those so-called "television music channels". During times like these I find myself paying more attention to what local communities around the nation are doing in-regards to this culture of ours called Hip Hop. As we all should know by now, Hip Hop is comprised of a few elements. These elements consist of dance, art, Djing and of-course rapping. The most popular element of the culture is rap music. At the foundation of the art form is Poetry. So, it is to no surprise that the art of the spoken word has become a verbal vehicle for inner-city youths to mentally escape the sometimes harsh realities of the community.

Hailing from Akron Ohio, poetry writer and now author of the book titled: Words Spoken, Charles Dent lll is no stranger to the everyday struggles a young black man has to face growing up in black America. In an era where THUGANOMICS and the so-called gangsta mentally has become the norm, Charles has chosen a more positive route to reach his goals. Growing up on Akron's west side Mr. Dent represents an alternative view of what a Buchtel High graduate looks like. Of-course he played football for the high school but he got a full ride scholarship for academics and is now finishing up his studies in Columbus Ohio at The Ohio State University. With his studies in Human Development and Family Sciences, he now embarks on the entrepreneurial path of making his dreams, reality.

His brand, Chuck's Chatter is just one way that he chooses to market himself. Another way is with, (what I like to call his movement) G.I.G Society. G.I.G is an undefined acronym that helps build the foundation of everyday living. Not only is he the co-founder but he's the coordinator of G.I.G Mentors. That right, this young man mentors young children as a youth basketball coach and is a tutor in the Columbus area. Charles believes we're in a time where the written word is becoming more and more irrelevant. He says, young people just take whats being said without doing any investigative reading. He said that's the inspiration for his book. "I'm trying to do my part" he said when it comes to getting this generation more in-tuned to reading.

His book Words Spoken, is a compilation of original poems written from the many ups and downs he had to face. From the first poem titled: Eye of a Child, he paints a vivid picture of what he had to endure as a child. This is one of my favorite poems because he simply (as they in the streets "keeps it 100% real". Another one of the realist poems in the book is titled: October 2ND. In this poem he writes from the perspective of a person who has lost a loved one and deals with a great deal of pain during this time of the year. As always Mr. Dent opens up and invites you into his world. Dealing with the personal lost of a sister, he writes " If you can hear me tell god to save my place". What a powerful line in a powerful poem. Other poems like BHS, True Lust and Unseen Father displays the versatility of the writer.

Charles Dent lll would like the readers of this book to look at it as proof of his success. Myself, I recognize the struggles of a young man trying to stay focused in a time where reality is often blurred. When it comes to the realness of his writings- I have to say this book is truly his experience untainted.
