It seems like when the weather heats up -so does the music industry. Over the past couple of weeks we have seen a few major releases that have the streets and the internet going nuts. Since I have a few CD's to review I will start off this week with one of my favorite new artist that goes by the name of Kevin Gates. I've been rocking with this guy for a little over a year now. For those that keep up with our articles and posting in this newspaper and online @ ill-board.com should already be familiar with the Baton Rouge Louisiana Rapper. Kevin Gates is what I like to call "your favorite rapper's favorite rapper". Meaning almost every rapper in the game has heard of him and respect what he brings to the game. But many rap fans have never heard of him. Over the last couple of years Kevin gates have been working hard to change all that. For those that are already in the know (in-regards to Kevin's hustle and grind) will tell you that he is probably the hardest working man in the game. With at-least four projects/mixtpaes to his credit, Kevin has even more music videos than your favorite rapper.
This time around Kevin hit the streets with another banging project titled By any means. The CD has everything that his core audience have come to appreciate about him. Gangsta beats and melodies are the order of the day when it comes to a Kevin Gates project. The first track off the By any means project is titled I wish I had, and the song is simply about things that he want. Now when you hear the production one would think that DJ Khalid and Future is involved. I like to think that this is just an attempt to make Gates a little more relevant and trendy this time around. With that being said, the first part of the project settles on that ever so popular DJ Khalid/Rick Ross type of production and concepts. With songs like: Wish I had, Don't know,Amnesia featuring Doe B and the street banger featuring 2 Chainztitled Bet I'm on it everybody will be checking for this new project.
What I like most about Kevin Gates is his Gangsta beats and his melodic singing and rapping. At first I thought that he had traded his style to be more relevant and trendy. But after making it through the first part of the CD, that's when I heard what I've come to expect from Gates. Songs like Posed to be in love, Stop lying, Wit it, Again andGet up on my level showcases everything that makes the guy a unique breath of fresh air. If you like some of his old joints likeSatellites and Neon Lights then you'll love mostly the entire project. But as for me, I like it when Kevin uses his voice for that singing rap thing which can be found all through the CD, but more-so towards the end of the project. All in all, this project should gain Kevin Gates more props and popularity. Until next time have some fun and get something done.
