Buju Banton headed to Jail.

Buju Banton

Every now and then I like to catch the city up on what's happening with the music game in other places. As you may or may not know every week I track the nations hottest radio station, websites and video shows to see whats what in there part of the map. One of the things that always trips me out is how much of a strong hold the unseen hand have on the game. I mean almost every popular radio stations in every market are playing the same play-list. That's right, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Trey Songz, Jamie Foxx, Chris Brown, Kanye West, Jay Z, Keri Hilson and Rihanna are dominating black radio all across the country. The reasons why I took the time to name all these artists is to show you that in reality you don't really have a far choice or variety. That's why I try to show you that there's other artists out there putting it down but you rarely hear any of there music on the airwaves. The list is too long for me to name them at this point- so that's why I listed the acts that you hear daily on your favorite BLAZIN HIP HOP AND R&B stations.

Smooth Da Hustler
The first artists is New York rapper Smooth Da Hustler. This guy has been putting down for years. As an artist signed to Profile Records back in the day Smooth Da Hustler made a name for himself. His street vibe is what made him a force to be reckoned with. Out of the game for over a decade He returned a while ago and now he's back with his latest mix-tape titled Violenttimes Day vol.2. The track titled All about my paper is a hardcore tale spilled over a strong east-coast laced beat. Of-course the song is about hustling and stacking his money. Another track is titled Cook it up and you can tell by the title it's a metaphor about cooking up hot hip hop music like he use to cook up crack cocaine. It's good to hear that traditional hardcore hip hop vibe but I really think I'm feed up with tales of materialism and drug deals gone bad.
Speaking of drug dealer rap my man Rick Ross hits us with another smoothed out laid back Maybach joint. The track is titled Ashes to Ashes. The song is about spoiling a female to the next level. I saw the video and the imagery is crazy. My girl Elise Neal stars as Ross's love interest. During the video you see over the top gestures from him to her in the form of about 20 purses, shopping sprees and expensive drinks. Sometimes I have to remind myself that these guys are only acting in a music video and not to take this stuff to seriously. So remember don't spend your rent money trying to impress a chick or keep up with the Joneses.

Buju Banton
Another thing that shocked me this week besides Blake Griffin's dunk over the car is the news about Dance hall great Buju Banton. For those who really don't get down with reggae music Buju Banton is like the Jay Z of the dance hall genre. Last week he received a Grammy for his latest CD and with that he also received a guilty verdict on drug charges. He is looking at 15 years in prison and understands that life hands us different choices and avenues. Although he still say he's innocent he stands strong in the line of fire. Buju Banton is one of my favorite artist of all time and my prayers are with him and his family during these hectic and uncertain times. Until next time have some fun and get something down..
