You want a big boxing fight between two top level talents? And you want to watch it for free on primetime television? Then Saturday night is the night for you.
This Saturday, Premier Boxing Champions presents the sport’s biggest fight since Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev, as undefeated Welterweights Keith Thurman (27-0(1); 22 KO) and Danny Garcia (33-0; 19 KO) finally square off.
There are a lot of legitimate complaints people have about boxing these days - fighters being protected and a lack of true top level fights being chief among them. This fight is the answer to all of that. Both Thurman and Garcia are undefeated fighters at the top of their game. There have been cries of protection in the past, particularly against Garcia, who has not faced a true top tier opponent since his win over Lucas Matthysse in 2013, but this fight is different. The fact that it’s on CBS is an extra bonus. This is PBC finally delivering on the promise of their concept - a battle between boxing’s best available on free network TV.
Also on the card are two other fights worth checking out. Erickson Lubin vs. Jorge Cota is a 154 pound fight designed to highlight Lubin, though not against a super easy softball opponent. And Chad Dawson vs. Andrzej Fonfara is two Light Heavyweight fighters who had major wins over Bernard Hopkins and Julio Cesar Chanez, Jr. respectively, but have had some tough times lately and now find themselves both in dire need of a win. It’s a very complete card.
