When it comes to female rap music, not to many lady rappers can compare to the lyrical she- giants from the days of old. Old school legends like Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Da Brat and Yo-Yo have all played a part in setting the bar so high in regards to the female Mc. Back in those days the female rapper had to come with pure lyrics and content. Always being compare to their male contemporaries the female Mc had to simply be better than most male rappers. The before mentioned female mc's all were that caliber of talent. Often out writing and selling the male rappers, Da Brat is credited to being the first female rapper to sell a million records (platinum status).
During the mid to late 90's a resurgences of a new breed of female rapper emerged. Not only could these female rappers bring it lyrically but they also brought something else to the game ( the nearly naked lady rapper). That's right, it was a time that if you were a lady rapper trying to get noticed in the music game you had to damn near get naked and dance. The sad part about this is the female rapper is in part the blame. Rappers like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown capitalized on what most men liked about rap videos and simply gave them what they wanted. Now rappers like Trina and the highly visible Niki Minaj is at the forefront of this current trend in urban music.
Niki Minaj in particular can be the best of both worlds. When you do your home work you will find that this sexy and often silly Mc is a true lyricist at heart. Hailing from the home of hip hop itself (NYC) she has been raised around the true culture of Mcing. Songs and videos from her before Lil Wayne days fill you tube. One of my favorite videos from this then 16 year old female rapper is titled N.I.G.G.A. On this song and video-it captures a more east-coast vibe showcasing the hardest lyrics that I've heard from a female in a long time. This song blows Eve out the water. Another track is titled Whatchu no about me. And on this track you can hear her maturing the now famous Niki Minaj Sound. All in all she is putting in work with everybody from Lil Wayne Mariah Carey, and Ludacris and she shares the same manager with the highly visible Gucci Mane. With all of that being said the sky's the limit for this conforming Mc. Until next time have some fun and get something done.
