Recently we were invited to celebrate the accomplishments and birthday of Dr. N.J. Akbar. For those that don't know Dr. Akbar transcended the boundaries that often captures and cripples young African American males. The boundaries of poverty, violence, a severe stuttering problem, and special education didn't stop the then young N.J. from obtaining his dreams and ultimate goal.
The actual event that we attended was more than a birthday celebration. It was also a celebration of him obtaining his doctorate degree and a fundraiser for his bid for the Akron School Board. It was at this event that I realized how much love and support that it takes for one student to keep focused and steadfast in his or her studies.
Many of Dr. N.J. Akbar's influences we're in the building showing so much love. Personally speaking, the great yet intimate words that they shared about him were so touching and inspiring it made me think that every one of our children should have this type of love and support.
