Cynthia Thompson Educates Us About Fibroids

Cynthia Taborn Thompson & Husband

Three weeks ago, February 26th at 2:00pm, I had surgery, an abdominal hysterectomy. For about 10 years, I suffered with fibroids. Over the past several years, the fibroids really began to affect my health causing weight gain, heavy bleeding, pain, swelling of my hands, feet, and ankles, acid reflux and low iron. At first I thought nothing of it. I thought the weight gain was “happy” weight since I had recently gotten married, thought the swelling was due to me having a job where I sit most of the day, basically making excuses and just dealing with them. It wasn’t until I went to give blood a few times and I was told I couldn’t give because my iron was too low that I began to be concerned about my health. Sure enough the fibroids had increased in size, causing my uterus to be the size of someone 5 months pregnant. So, I decided to have the surgery which went well and it was discovered that 1 of the fibroids was the size of a bowling ball!!

This entire process has had its ups and downs, I was dehydrated, had to have a blood transfusion, and the pain is something I’ve never experienced. Over the weekend I began to feel less pain and started to feel better. I share my story for anyone who may be struggling with fibroids, or any health concerns. It’s so important that we take care of ourselves and pay attention to things that may be going on with our bodies. Self-care has definitely been moved to the top of my “to-do” list!
